about
The classification of “soothing modern folk”, offered as a means to explain away the artistic riches mined by I Am Oak linchpin, Thijs Kuijken, does little to extol the perfect balance of imposing gloom and confused beauty that inhabits the odd-but-wonderful art he creates. The seven songs featured on Sou Ka, being no exception, moan and creak like some precarious old cinema projector, but when that projector casts forth the most entrancing movie imaginable, who cares if the machine behind the magic is a bit cranky.

'Sou Ka' translated from Japanese means 'I see'... not to literally see something or someone, but to see beyond what you are actually presented with. Prophetic? Not really. Very simply I Am Oak offer something disarmingly honest amidst all the gloss, transience and mediocrity. On the surface subversively simple and self-consciously idiosyncratic, these songs – messed-up vessels, warped and misshapen – are as unattractive as you like, but scratch the surface and they are all the more enchanting for their peculiarity.

'Sou Ka' was originally released as a limited CDR in 2008. For more information about I Am Oak's latest releases please visit www.snowstar.nl
